Character Breakdown:
Dorothy Frye - Widow of the recently deceased Dewey Frye Sr. Left with little time to grieve due to events of the show. A strong distinguished woman who takes issue with those who cross her family. Sammy Jo Frye-Lefette - Middle Child. Little miss perfect.
Harlene Frye - Oldest Child. Felt she needed to pursue her “big city dreams” which promptly chewed her up and spat her back home.
Beecham Lefette - Sammy Jo’s husband. Warm, welcoming, but a strong man. Has an inviting quality that allows others to open up to him, to the endless frustration of his wife.
Dewey Frye, Jr. - The Youngest Child. Either insanely bright or insanely dull and no one can tell which one. Often on his own agenda or mission much to the confusion of those around him.
Uncle Dub Frye - Dewey’s Brother. No one in the family has seen Uncle Dub in years. Every time he comes around he wants something so the family is right to be suspicious.
Atticus “Attie” Van Leer - Uncle Dub’s lawyer and long time on again off again lover of Harlene. He’s finally got up the courage to tell her he’s done with that though.
Martha Ann Fox - Long Time friend of Dorothy. Fiercely protective and a master of sly southern wit.
Fairy June Cooper - Long Time friend of both Dorothy and Martha Ann, she’s there for support and a good anecdote.
Benny Charles Greenwood - Long Time friend of Dewey Sr. He’s been around long enough that he’s a somewhat unofficial uncle to the children.
Ozella Meeks - The Nosy Church Lady. Yes, THAT nosy church lady. She’s got one iron in everybody’s fireplace, one eye on everybody, one side of her mouth open to tell everybody else’s business and one hand in everybody’s drawers looking to swipe the fine China when no one else is looking. Grating, pompous, arrogant, and no one can tell her she’s not the woman holding this community together.
Director's Notes on Casting PLEASE READ
I’m all too aware of the age ranges one will find when looking up a version of this show to read. And I’m all too aware of the gender specifications of certain characters. Theater is an INclusive place for all. Y’all means ALL. EVERYONE is invited to audition regardless of age ranges, perceived size, and gender expression. I take them all as suggestions. The person who reads the role best, gets the role as long as it makes sense (Dorothy can’t be 60 with a 20 year old Martha Ann, etc.). So hang those preconceived notions at the door and audition the best you can. I look forward to seeing you all there!
